While waiting for a vegetable roll to be prepared for me in a grocery store, I looked over at the buffet and thought, "The food is so vulnerable." On cue, a man walked up to the salad bar. He stopped in front of the imitation crabmeat. He looked left. He looked right. Thinking the coast was clear, he shoved his bare hand into the crab dish, grabbed three pieces and popped them into his mouth. Then he walked away. The dual moral of this story? One. When stealing food from a buffet remember to also check behind you. Two. Should be obvious.
There are so many false securities that they use to trick people into using the buffet. First is the "sneeze guard" which is basically useless. Second are the tongs which people use to grab the food. Makes sense until the handle ends up in the food. When that happens it is as if hundreds of people just dropped their hands on that food.
Three verifiable things about me. One. I am an only child. The concept of sharing, therefore, is foreign to me. Two. I am a Virgo. The sign regarded as a perfectionist. Three. My mother raised me to be meticulously clean; compulsively tidy. According to my mother, "You have taken this clean thing way too far." I disagree. Apologies to my mother.
Nature or nurture? Who knows? Who cares? I have not been diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Nor would I label myself a Cleanaholic. Or a Germaphobe. My world though, is definitely a unique place. One where doors open magically. Hotel mattresses are pristine. And estheticians never double dip.
I live in this world without a bubble or a honeycomb mask. About 15 years ago I got tired of catching the flu du jour and became ever more so hygienically vigilant -- perhaps obsessively so.
